I wrote my last blog on Pari about four months ago….there have been lots of changes since then in her learning, observation powers and oratory skills. She has made some great strides and they are mentioned below in brief.
We went to Mathura/Brindavan in Feb 2010 and prayed at Banke Bihari Temple for Pari to start speaking. Since then, by divine intervention perhaps, she has picked up really well...
Books & The Desire to Learn New words
All of this learning actually picked up a good pace when, on one fine day, we got some picture books for her. One lazy Sunday, we went down to Sunday Book bazaar in Daryaganj and picked up 7-8 picture books with numbers, alphabets and nice big pictures on glossy paper. That actually sparked the start of a great relationship between my daughter and her books. She loved going through the pages and asking us what each picture was called. The method she used for this was interesting….She would get the book to us, point at the picture she wanted to know and would tap on it 2-3 times or till we said what it was. Later on she replaced it with pointing on the object and saying “This is (eeees)…” and we would fill in the blanks with the name. So much is her fascination for books that at times we have to hide them away from her sight so that she doesn’t keep on asking us, “ This is…This is….” all the time!
Forest Calls
She has become well versed in animal (and in some cases human) sounds. This was achieved by taking her through them one by one. Her memory and keen observation helped in her memorizing these. I will list down all of them below for me and my family’s future reference:
Horse says Eeeeheeeheee
Lion (or Tiger says) Aaaaahhhhhnnnn
Cat say Meow
Papa says Pari Pari
Duck says Quack Quack
Hen says Coo-Coo-Coooo
Goat says mehehehe
Chachu says Kaki Kaki Kaki
Goldy says Ikku Ikku Ikku
Pigeon says dool dool dool doo (We loved how cute this sounded….whenever we asked Pari this question, she would smile, as if knowing we are looking forward to hear it, and then say it with glee!)
Cow says Baaaaaaawwwwww!
Dog says Bow Bow (bo-bo)
Sparrow says Chee Chee
Crow says Caaan Caaan
Elephant says Ooooohhhuuuu! (with a hand lifted in the air like a hoisted trunk)
She has also started learning names of fruits, Objects etc. like Mango-meygo, Apple - appo, Chickoo - pronounced Exact, Orange - Orig etc.....
A keen sense of observation
She can relate to pictures and what she is told very easily. Some examples are listed below:
As I had mentioned earlier, she loves watching TV and songs in particular. Recently she has also started watching cartoons. Now if I show her a picture of a Bald Amitabh Bachchan, she would break into a song and sing “Pa Pa Pa Pa Pa…”. When she sees a Rs. 500 note with Mahatma Gandhi, she would again sing “Pa Pa Pa Pa Pa…” maybe due to some resemblance with a bald Amitabh!
Similarly when she sees a picture of Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi (from the movie Ishqiya), she would say “Toota Toota” in order to sing her version of the song “Ibn Batuta, Bagal mein joota” Basically she can look at a poster of a movie or one of the actors and is able to remember a song from their latest movie which is running on the channels.
Because we have been trying to teach her A for Apple, B for Ball etc., she has begun to pick up words and concepts very fast. She can repeat most the alphabets when we say them, which is good. She can learn the meanings a little later! Even when she sees words on a billboard, she says “ A, B E” etc….since she knows these are alphabets.
Her pronunciation is not very clear, but this expected at her age and sounds cute. For instance, she says “Sish” instead of “Fish”, Metto for Metro etc!
Names of near and dear ones
When we point our fingers to faces on the photographs on the wall, she can recognize faces of family members and say their names. She can now say Papa, Mummy, Dadu, Dadi, Chachu, Pari(her name) when we point to the respective picture. The other day she saw someone on a Maggi Pack and said Goldy. When we looked at the packet it showed a photo of a boy who resembled Goldy very closely. Even we had not noticed this earlier!
Appearance
A recent trip for immunization to the doctor revealed the following stats:
Her weight is 11.36 Kg. – This is a little less and should be ideally around 12 or so.
Her height is 90cms, about 3 feet – which is really good for someone her age.
Her hair has become dense, but very tangled and tough to comb. She cries a lot when we try to comb them. Lets try and see if hair softeners (like Livon) work – we don’t know yet!
Dance Steps
We have started showing her some basic steps whenever a catchy number is playing. She has begun picking up some moves, and whenever we ask her to, by saying “ Danchhee Danchhee..”, she breaks into a cute little jig without too much effort.
I’ll try to record a video of it soon and upload it on Youtube soon!
Food Habits
Making her eat food is still an exercise in acting and theatrics. I have to ask for food from her mom saying “Aa-Aa-Aa”. She would raise the spoon to me, suddenly change the direction and the morsel would reach Pari, who would gulp it immediately. I would wail and weep since I was deprived of the food and Pari would smile back at me. Then we would repeat this till we felt Pari was well fed.
At present she likes eating Gol Gappas (unfilled and dry), Vadas (without the sambhar), Simply Loves Maggi-like me, Fried items etc. We have started making her eat different kinds of food, including eggs etc. so that her taste buds get developed.
The Latest Development
As a last note, I want to share latest thing we have noticed. She has always loved travelling in the car. She also likes riding with me on a bike. I went out on Tappu’s Avenger yesterday to the market and she was seated in front of me holding on to the petrol tank and looking at everything around. She would cry if I stopped the bike anywhere or asked her to get down. At times she would break into a song or Johny Johny Pa Pa Pa when the bike was cruising.
She has a song in her heart with the wind in her face!
More Soon.
Cheers,
VJ
